May 2014 Favourites

Hello Snowdroplets!

Now, I realise that it is now half way through June, but I thought, hey, better late than never! There were quite a few bits which I’ve been loving last month which I wanted to share with you, so without further ado…

Beauty Favourites

Beauty Favourites

Nivea Soft 75ml – £2.49

I’m fairly sure I featured a Nivea skincare product in my last favourites post, but  I just think that they’re great! This has a lovely light texture and really helped to smooth out the crazy dry patches I get on my nose and forehead, better than any other moisturiser I have tried. Not to mention, it is very affordable as mine lasted ages – I’ve only just run out.

Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder - £3.99

Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder – £3.99

Nearly all my friends own this now upon my recommendation as I think it is perfect for just swooshing (technical term) onto your skin after applying foundation or even just moisturiser for an even, airbrushed finish. It doesn’t work any miracles, but for £3.99 I love it for just adding a little extra coverage and zapping away any shine; as you can see, I’ve made a bit of a dent in mine now. Love it.

Models Own Indian Ocean Topcoat - £5

Models Own Indian Ocean Topcoat – £5

I’ve already done a full post to express my ultimate adoration for this product which you can check out here: https://10simonsv.wordpress.com/2014/05/17/current-nail-favourite-models-own-indian-ocean/ Therefore, I will keep this short and sweet: this stuff = glittery, shimmery, mermaid-esque magic in a bottle.

Avon Speed Dry+ in Ballerina - £2 (in clearance)

Avon Speed Dry+ in Ballerina – £2 (in clearance)

Finally. My search is over. For months I have been trying to uncover the perfect neutral and here it is for y’all. I’m not a fan of the ‘foundation nails’, where your nail varnish is meant to be a similar shade to your foundation as I find that just looks like you have no nails, just bizarre fleshy claw type things. Then again, when I’ve tried shades like this one promising to be the perfect nude, I’ve found that they just come out clear with next to none colour, creating a plastic-y, clingfilm-wrapped-around-your-nails-look. Not cute. But, this, is perfect. It’s not a pastel pink, but it’s not a peach, it’s that lovely, natural, happy medium which I reckon I could get away with at school. Oh, and I adore the Avon Speed Dry range – I also own their shade ‘Sprightly Mint’ and they literally dry in 30 seconds. Amazing.

Beautyuk Posh Pout Moisturising Tinted Lip Balm - £2.99

Beautyuk Posh Pout Moisturising Tinted Lip Balm – £2.99

Yeah… I have no idea what I have done to the top of this, I definitely wasn’t like that when I bought it? Ahh well! I wasn’t sure what to expect from this due to it only being £2.99 but I’d heard great things about them so thought, meh, I’ll give it go. But, wow, I am impressed! Mine is in the shade ‘power to the purple’, though I’m not sure why, as it isn’t purple at all but a bright, bold pink colour which is really fun for Summer and lasts, literally, for hours.  What I was especially surprised about was how moisturising it was. Being a sufferer of very dry lips, I nearly always use a lip balm before applying any lipstick, but for this I don’t need to! Yes, it is that good. Unfortunately, the colour range is a bit limited, but I strongly suggest you check these out.

Gilly Hicks Body Lotion in Loring Aster - £2

Gilly Hicks Body Lotion in Loring Aster – £2 (in the clearance)

I think these are normally between £8-10 so couldn’t resist ordering one for only £2. I’ve never tried anything from the Gilly Hicks or Hollister (the brands are fairly similar) body range before, so I was pretty excited to try this one. First off, boy, does this smell delicious! It is fairly moisturising, but I’m not gonna lie this is mainly just in my favourites because of the amazing fresh, fruity and slightly perfume-y scent. The smell also lingers on the skin for a couple of hours after using it which is a definite positive as it smells so good.

And now onto my Random Favourites…

Handmade Scrunchie

Handmade Scrunchie

I’ve been really enjoying whacking on a scrunchie to either jazz up a ponytail or a bun, as I just think they add a cute and casual layer of whimsy and 90s nostalgia to a look. This one, I actually made myself with the guidance of my lovely cousin, so if any of you would like a tutorial post on how to whip one up yourself, do let me know in the comments. Scrunchies are definitely having a comeback, they seem to be popping up in shops everywhere – and I love it!

Kleeneze Soothing Gel Eye Mask - recieved as a gift

Kleeneze Soothing Gel Eye Mask – recieved as a gift

This surprises me by how soothing and lovely it feels every time I use it, and that’s saying something, because recently I have been using it a lot. All you have to do is leave the gel insert in the fridge for about 30mins, slide it into the flap at the back and sit and relax with it on for as long as you like; the gel usually stays cool for a maximum of about 40mins. Lately, I’ve been using this in the bath which has been the perfect end to a stressful day of exams, but you could use it in bed before going to sleep or just as a break for tired eyes during revision (though I’ve finally finished my exams now – huzzah!).

Primark Wire Heart Fairy Lights - £6

Primark Wire Heart Fairy Lights – £6

I’d been looking for some pretty fairy lights for looping around my bed for ages but they were all around £20, so when I saw some adorable heart ones in Primark for only £6(!!) I couldn’t believe my luck! In the evening when I’m getting ready for bed, I close my curtains, light some candles and flip these on and feel like I’m in a beautiful, magical fairy castle… um, no hate, guys. Every female deserves fairy lights.

So there you have it, my belated May favourites. I hope you have enjoyed it and perhaps I have inspired some of you to try a few of these items yourself.

Current Nail Favourite: Model’s Own Indian Ocean

Hello Snowdroplets!

This stuff, as the title suggests, is definitely my new favourite nail varnish – let me try to explain why…

First off, I bought this bottle of nail varnish inside a bottle of nail varnish. Oh yes, you read that right. Model’s Own pop-up type shop is in the shape of a cute bubbly nail varnish bottle with pink ‘varnish’ spilling out – I mean how frickin’ awesome?! What I especially loved was how the staff spoke about The Bottle as if it was some kind of alternate dimension where nails were worshiped like Gods and nothing bad… like, dare I say, bare or chipped nails… existed. It was a little slice of girly, beauty heaven!

Anyway, onto the actual nail varnish. Normally £5 (but I bought mine with two others so it was cheaper), this is a gorgeous shimmery top coat. In the bottle, it looks like a combination of turquoise and pink swirls with tiny glitter particles, but on the nails these colours do not show so much. It lets the base coat colour shine through, simply providing a gorgeous sheen and subtly picking out the pinks and blues of the shade and letting those parts beautifully catch the light.

I’ve used Indian Ocean over two different base colours to give you an idea of it’s appearance:

I’m not sure these pictures quite do justice to this topcoat. Also, I have no idea what that black mark on my little finger is is the last picture?! Ahh well ;-). The base colour in the first look is Avon’s Speed Dry in Sprightly Mint, a gorgeous fresh mint green for Spring/ Summer and the base coat for the second look is another Model’s Own nail varnish from their scented range (though I have never noticed a scent at all) in Grape Juice.

What do you think of this nail varnish? The only negative thing I can say about it is that it does take a while to dry, definitely at least 5 mintutes. But once it is on, it certainly seems to stay on and not chip – which is a must for me!

Fashion At Your Fingertips: Triangles

I’m not quite sure what you’d call this nail look, but I find it quite edgy and sleek, yet with cool, fresh colours, still youthful and summery.

Basically, all I did was paint my nails a pretty mint green with Avon’s Speed Dry in Sprightly Mint and then Sellotape a cross on each of my fingernails, leaving just a triangle bare. Then I would paint on the blue and wait for it to dry. It is very important that you allow more than enough drying time otherwise it will all smudge – I know this from experience! Finally, you then peel off the tape and ta-dah! You are done. 😀

Trend Alert: Spots

Spots have already been pretty big news of late, but with the sighting of not one, but two royalties sporting the look, fashion forecasts that spots will be taking over for Autumn. Oh, and how cute is the royal baby?! Congratz Kate and Wills!

I’ve always had a soft spot (haha) for polka dots so today I’ve got together all my favourite spotty items, which are your faves?

Jack Wills (in the sale) £19

I love the olive colour of these jeans, they add to the too cute vintage feel of them – love, love, love!

Boohoo £10

This is so versatile, and for £10 I reckon you could get plenty of wear out of it – and it’s so pretty!

New Look (in the sale) £12

This is so sleek and modern, if I had a tablet it would soo be going in this!

Topshop £29

This would look really cute either tucked in, or loose – I just love it!

Topshop £30

I love these too much for words. They’re so retro, cute and awesome… if only they were half the price. 😦

Forever21 (in the sale) £1.99

Just add a touch of the trend to your outfit with this big and beautiful bangle!

Cath Kidston (in the sale) £18

Cath Kidston plimsolls are total classics in my books and would just look adorable with jeans, skirts, shorts – you name it!

Final Friday Featured Fashion Find (sniff)

Goodbye Friday Featured Fashion Find. We’ve had a good run but I feel us drifting apart… It’s not you it’s me. I just havn’t got the time you deserve to be given anymore… (Sniff).

But I will do one more for old times sake! This week I have been lusting comfy, casual hoodies – but obviously they have to be in trend too! They are a total staple for lounging indoors in comfort, or to shrug on for a brisk walk into town. Here is an affordable yet stylish selection I found this week…

Laura Neon Zip Through Hoody

Boohoo.com £10

Forever 21 £16.75

Mariah Dogtooth All Over Print Zip Up Hoodie

Boohoo (in the sale) £8

Jack Wills £59.50

Hollister £50

The last two are better if you want a good quality hoodie – I can personally vouch for the fact that the Hollister one is REALLY soft as I have a navy one which I wear with everything. However, the others are great bargain buys. All are super casual but with a hint of a trend going on – meaning you can wear it out!

Happy Medium

Mid heels, midi dresses, midi skirts, mid-drift skimming tops… Ok, I made that last phrase up, but crop tops are also in, and are these sounding familiar? Because all things ‘midi’ are big news this season!

MID HEELS

1.2.3.4.

1 and 2. New Look £19,99   3. £17.99   4. Topshop £55.00

I can’t decide which colour scheme I prefer out of the first too… the casual tan with boho, festival-esque coloured sole, or the edgy monochrome with the aztec-ish patterned sole…! Which do you prefer? I adore the third red pair as well, for two reasons: 1) I adore the colour red. Striking, feminine, but with a hint of danger. And 2) this style with the band over the toe and the skinny strap around the ankle is all over the catwalk and looks chic and expensive. The same goes for the fourth pair, about the shape but these come in a sleek, sophisticated grey with a clean silhouette, but with an edgy, modern heel. What’s more, mid heels are far more feet friendly than whopping platforms, which is always a plus in my books!

MIDI DRESSES AND SKIRTS

1.2.3. 4.

1. Chiara £14.95    2. Select fashion £8    3. Fashion Union £15    4. Topshop £20

Aztec, tie dye, graphitti and bright and bold colours all make uber trendy and fashionable midi skirts and dresses. They are often really reasonably priced too – my favourite, the graphitti dress from Fashion Union, for example, is an awesome £15! £15!!! :-O!!!! You would probably be able to dress them up or down. When I asked my friend whether someone could wear it casually or for an event she said: ”Well… You wear clothes all the time don’t you?”, oh dear… this is why I love her! I personally prefer the bright, fun ones as opposed to the monochrome, sophisticated ones, but that’s just me, I know lots of people who look gorgeous with the more grown-up ones.

MIDI/CROP TOPS

1.2. 3.

1. Topshop £14    2 Topshop £22    3. New Look £9.99

Cutsie or exotic, there’s one for everyone. Ok, I realise they’re a bit daring and scary but their the perfect holiday staple or they could be worn with a high-waisted skirt or shorts so you only reveal a strip of skin. I ADORE the first one, it’s just soo pretty!! And it’s a pretty good price for Topshop too. Not to mention the New Look one is so fun too, only £9.99. :-O

Which of the ‘midi’s are your favourites? I think the crop tops are the most fun, but then again, the dresses and skirts are so classy… and the heels so practical… I can’t decide!!

Friday Featured Fashion Find

”Here comes the sun, da da da DA!”

Forget what I said last week, bring on Summer!! Who can resist the tingling, golden rays cascading off you skin, the vast baby blue expanse stretching across the sky, the birds singing, the butterflies flitting, summer sizzling, not me. Forget neutrals, monochrome and all that, this week I’ve been all about colour and fun in the sun what with possibly the nicest bank holiday ever, so I hope these fresh and funky sunnies reflect this….

1.2.3.Image 1 of ASOS Half Frame Kitten Round Sunglasses4.Image 1 of Jeepers Peepers Duke Fuscia Round Frame Sunglasses

5.6.

1. H&M £3.99

2. H&M £5.99

3. Asos £12

4. Asos £16

5. Topshop £20

6. Simply Be £16

Some of you may be ‘tut tutting’ at the high street brands here as I know a lot of people like to splash out for a classic, timeless pair sunglasses as they believe they are something which should be good quality, however I prefer cheap and cheerful on trend ones so I can replace them every year and have more than one pair! Though I can see the sense with both methods. 🙂

Which are your faves?
